How does a Medical Alert System Work?

Medical Alert System Requirements

  • A functioning phone line with dial-tone (pulse/rotary or touch-tone) that can dial a toll free number. If a 9 or an access code is needed before dialing, that is not a problem. (If you don't have a phone line, but have broadband high-speed internet, our VOIP Medical Alert solution may be ideal.)

  • A power outlet.

Medical Alert Usage

When installed, the medical alert system is activated by pressing the help button on the unit, or the personal help button worn around the wrist or neck.  The unit will dial the toll-free number to the Care Center and transmit the unit number and alarm information, allowing the Care Center dispatcher to see all the vital information within seconds of the call coming in.

Answering the Call

When the Care Center dispatcher answers the emergency call, they will have all your medical and responder information, along with what type of alarm it is (was the help button pressed, did the fire detector go off, did the medication dispenser detect that you forgot to take your medication, etc).  After the information is received, the unit turns on its speaker and microphone, allows the Care Center dispatcher to address you by name and ask what they can do.  If you say you need help, they will contact the responders you have set up with VRI in advance, or the Emergency services in your area if paramedics or fire department is needed.  The dispatcher will follow up on your requests to make sure you get the help you need.

A Medical Alert is NOT just for Emergencies

There is never a per-call charge by VRI or a charge on your phone bill, so feel free to use your VRI Medical Alarm Emergency Response System anytime you feel unsafe or need a little reassurance.
